VW Caddy Sportline ready for the Track

We always have GREAT stock levels of Sportline models

Following its best-ever track results in 2008, hopes are high that the coming season of the Volkswagen Racing Cup might provide even greater success for the world's only racing van – the Caddy TDI.

The crowd-pleasing Caddy van will be back in the hands of its regular pilot, Peter Wyhinny, for the 2009 season, and with some fine-tuning in the workshops of Volkswagen Racing UK, he hopes to improve on the three podium finishes the turbodiesel van delivered last year.

'The Caddy is now entering its fifth full season of competition,' said Wyhinny, 'and it's fair to say it's now treated as a very serious competitor. We still have a smile on our faces but our rivals are no longer looking on the racing van idea as a "bit of a joke".

'Last year the Caddy took a real step forward in performance. Our objective is to score better results than in 2008; we are aiming for the podium, to be a real thorn in the sides of the cars and may even be looking for our first win.'

The Caddy can more than handle the best of the car opposition thanks to its 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, which produces 260 PS and maximum torque of 377 lbs ft with the help of Volkswagen Racing UK/Superchips mapping. A six-speed gearbox is fitted as well as a bespoke Milltek exhaust system.

Wyhinny, whose day job is at the helm of SEAT UK, says that the twistier tracks on the calendar – and in particular the Knockhill circuit in Scotland – will suit the Caddy's well-balanced chassis and handling characteristics.

The first rounds of the Volkswagen Racing Cup take place at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire on 11 to 13 April and across the UK until September. Full details of the race programme and the Volkswagen Racing Cup are available from www.vw-cup.co.uk.

The Caddy is the smallest model in the van range from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. It offers a load volume of 3.2 m2 and payload of up to 724 kg, with diesel engines available producing 69 PS, 104 PS and 140 PS. Retail prices start from £10,750 (plus VAT).

The Caddy Racer inspired Volkswagen’s stylish Sportline van range, which now includes the Caddy, Caddy Maxi and Transporter. The Sportline features colour-coded bumpers, exterior mirrors and door handles, a lower front spoiler with integrated front fog lights, rear spoiler, bespoke alloy wheels, plus chrome grille and side rails, and leather upholstery.

Transporter Delivers Winning Economy

Contract Hire or Lease a Van With Great Fuel Economy

A Volkswagen Transporter has demonstrated how cost-effective it is to run by winning its class in the ALD Automotive TOTAL Excellium MPG Marathon 2008 by achieving 52.48 mpg after a challenging competition in real-world conditions.

As the only medium or large van to achieve more than 50 mpg during the event, the Transporter T28 SWB also used less fuel and had the lowest cost per mile than its rivals thanks to an economical combination of performance and flexibility from its 1.9-litre TDI PD engine delivering 102 PS with 250 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm.

The official results also show that the Transporter travelled almost three miles further per gallon over the 412 mile route than its most direct rival in the competition, the Mercedes Vito 109 CDi, and was also competitive against smaller vans, with a lower cost per tonne/mile than a Citroën Nemo.

‘This clearly demonstrates how cost-effective and economical the Volkswagen Transporter can be in real-world driving, and how operators can cut fuel costs by using more economical driving techniques,’ said Simon Elliott, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

‘The MPG figures speak for themselves, but what they don’t show is how comfortable and easy to drive the Transporter is,’ said Doug Powell, a retired public sector Fleet Manager who drove the Transporter in the MPG Marathon.

‘It drives like a car and the quality of the driver’s environment makes long spells at the wheel much more appealing,’ he continued.

The real-world conditions for the MPG marathon included a variety of A and B roads plus motorway driving over a fixed route from Bristol to Macclesfield and back via Wales and the Peak District with the Transporter carrying 50 per cent of its payload.

Full details of the results of the MPG Marathon will be published in a special supplement with the November issue of Fleet World magazine.

New Caravelle Startline from £299 a month

Rob Glover Is Stable's Lifestyle Specialist

The good news for busy families who need a versatile and spacious seven-seater is that the ultimate MPV, the Volkswagen Caravelle, is now available from £23,950 (on the road), or £299 a month on Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Finance Solutions (Personal Contract Plan), for the new Startline special edition. A new long wheelbase (LWB) model also joins the Caravelle range offering one of the biggest passenger and luggage compartments in the large MPV sector.

Prices for the new Startline special edition start at over £5,000 less than the existing entry-level SE models, with a specification that includes unique upholstery, air conditioning, twin sliding rear doors, rubber floor covering and 17-inch steel wheels, plus a folding table which neatly stores in the side sliding door. A choice of two economical, turbocharged diesel engines includes a four-cylinder 1.9 litre 102PS TDI PD (£23,950 on the road), or a five-cylinder 2.5 litre 130PS TDI PD model (£25,350 on the road).

A variety of option packs provide further value for money with convenient and affordable ways to upgrade the Startline specification. For example: the £600 ‘Startline pack 1’ includes 16-inch alloy wheels and rear privacy glass (saving £100); while ‘Startline pack 2’ offers body-coloured bumpers, front fog lights and front and rear parking sensors for £672 (worth £984). In addition, to make the Caravelle a camper, the ‘Sleep pack’ (£568) includes privacy blinds and an extension for the rear seat with a cover to protect the upholstery.

Like all Caravelles, the Startline special edition features two individual seats in the middle row which can rotate to face the rear to create a sociable lounge area, plus the third row of seats can fold back to make a flat bed area. Every passenger has the pleasure of plenty of legroom and headroom, plus the Caravelle’s unique floor rail system allows the second and third row of seats to be moved backwards or forwards to optimise passenger or luggage space.

The wheelbase of the new LWB model is 40cm longer and increases the interior volume by over 15 per cent from 5.8m³ to 6.7m³, providing a generous luggage space for seven people.

It is designed for customers, particularly executive chauffeur or private hire businesses, who want to maximise passenger and luggage space. It is available in SE trim level with a choice of two 2.5 litre five-cylinder turbodiesel engines with 130PS (£30,190 on the road), or 174PS with a six-speed manual gearbox (£31,790 on the road) or with Tiptronic transmission (£33,385 on the road).
