The California XXL concept gives us hope that a larger, more capable, camper van could be coming in 2018. Ever since the 2017 VW Crafter was unveiled, we’ve been daydreaming about a more spacious and powerful Cali!
The California XXL gives us a look at a Crafter-based motorhome with a fixed high roof, kitchen and a unique wet room. Moving up from the short wheelbase of the current Californias, the California XXL would be based on the MWB 2017 Crafter and would bring with it all the benefits of a larger structure.
The VW California is an archetypal motorhome. It has won the hearts and minds of thousands, with a well thought out and highly flexible interior. Now, the new and bigger Crafter with its large number of new driver assistance systems, comfortable handling and low fuel consumption offers a unique opportunity to transfer the qualities of the California to the next size up.
The California XXL concept vehicle is being presented by Volkswagen to show the capabilities of a full-grown variant of the popular motoring globetrotter.
Volkswagen says: “The innovative vehicle body and interior layout creates lots of space inside the California XXL, including for a comfortable bed of around two metres in length. In addition, a screened-off, spacious living area allows great freedom of movement. A bench seat and the front seats, which can be rotated 180 degrees, provide plenty of room. Purpose-built and designed as in the California are the kitchen with twin-hob cooker and fridge, sink and extendable work surface. Thanks to the large dimensions of the California XXL, a cleverly devised wet room with shower and WC adds comfort and convenience.”
At 2.9 metres high, the XXL model would still have sophisticated aerodynamics, including special indentations in the redesigned high roof. This would ensure that the drag remains as low as it would on a conventional Crafter despite all the additional conveniences in this larger motorhome.
The image above shows what seems to be a solar panel on the roof and a name badge similar to the R-Line badge found on a Tiguan R-Line. We think that the new design of the Crafter is perfectly suited to a motorhome, especially after we got to stand inside one at the CV Show this year.
