We sat down with Gordon from Ministry of Friends & Automobiles to discuss his car photography and get some tips on how to take great car photos!

[vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_custom_heading text="Tell us a bit about yourself? Who are you? What do you do for a living?" font_container="tag:h5|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]My name is Gordon Irvine and I run my own automotive photography blog called “Ministry of Friends & Automobiles”. I’m from an era where cars were appreciated because of the people that drove them… nowadays people get appreciated because of the cars they drive. I wanted to change this back with MFA. It’s all about friends first, then cars.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text="How did you get into photography, specifically car photography?" font_container="tag:h5|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]I work closely with Mike from Kleenfreaks, we were friends long before it all started. When Mike was starting out, I tagged along to lend a hand. Once we got set up at shows, I began to take some pictures with a standard point-and-shoot camera. I realised that photographers weren't always car lovers, and they missed some beautiful lines when taking pictures. Also, lots of people who were only starting out in the modified world were getting no coverage because nobody knew them, so I got to know them. I have had a love for cars since I was a toddler… my Dad loved to change his cars often, and my uncles liked to modify. I grew up around VW Santana, Datsun Z, Mini Coopers, XR2’s, AX-GT’s… the list goes on and on![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="3570" img_size="full" css_animation="right-to-left"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row_content_no_spaces" css=".vc_custom_1481111196802{background-color: #212121 !important;}"][vc_column][vc_single_image image="3569" img_size="full" alignment="center"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="3568" img_size="full" css_animation="right-to-left"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_custom_heading text="Can you give us some tips on taking great car photos?" font_container="tag:h5|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]Understand the car and the location needed to compliment it. Trial the location before a live shoot and make sure the natural lighting is appropriate. When at shows, don’t be repetitive with your shots, take each picture as a new story. Put more into your shot than just the car. People will get bored looking at car after car… they want to see what's happening around the car too.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text="Is there anything you think we should avoid when taking photos of cars?" font_container="tag:h5|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]Yes, two things, one of which I’ve already mentioned: don’t be repetitive. Other than that, when it comes to editing, the single biggest mistake everyone makes when starting out is over editing! Less is more…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" content_placement="middle" css=".vc_custom_1478082014840{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: #000000 !important;}"][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text="What are your favourite photographs, and what’s the story behind them?" font_container="tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ffffff" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="3559" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]Anthony Warriors' awesome VW Jetta. This is what MFA is all about! Our good friends had visited for a show and, as part of the hospitality, we included a photoshoot at Kleenfeaks HQ.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="3560" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]Custom hot rod displayed at the Tetley building as part of the Fueled Society show. I get the opportunity now and then to travel to these shows, meet friends - old and new - and to gather coverage for people at home.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="3561" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]Laferrari at the Supercar Siege show. I made it over to this show primarily to support the Rally for Heroes which is a charity close to my heart.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_custom_heading text="What piece of equipment, other than your cameras, do you think is the most important or useful?" font_container="tag:h5|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]My kit bag consists of 2 Nikon bodies, a wide-angle 10-24, a 70-300mm and my trusty 35mm prime lens. Lots of batteries and memory cards, of course, but once you get to know your required field, you only need a few lenses. I don’t have expensive equipment, it's all entry level gear to be honest. I am self taught, and I've learnt from my mistakes - and I’m still learning.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text="What car are you currently driving? If money was no object, what would be your perfect car?" font_container="tag:h5|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]I'm currently driving the Audi TT 225. I love this little car, for now anyways, haha. I've always had the same dream car for as long as I remember, an Aston Martin DB9! I just love the body style and sound of the engine... gorgeous![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="3567" img_size="full" css_animation="right-to-left"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text="Do you have any plans for your photography in the future?" font_container="tag:h4|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]Yes! I'm starting this year with a trip to Florida for the EuroTripper show and then I'm back for the start of show season with another trip, hopefully to EuroSunday, in Belgium. That’s just the first few months! I can’t plan any further than that, haha.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text="Thank you for your time!" font_container="tag:h4|text_align:left" use_theme_fonts="yes"][vc_column_text]
