OLEV Grant Scheme: A Comprehensive Guide

OLEV Grant Scheme: A Comprehensive Guide

There are 2 types of OLEV Grant Scheme you need to know about. Please click one of the 3 options below to skip straight to the scheme information.

Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)

Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

Becoming an OLEV approved installer

The OLEV Grant Scheme for a home ChargePoint (referred to as the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme or EVHS Grant) is a government-approved monetary incentive that provides £500 off the cost of purchasing and installing a home charging point for your electric vehicle.

The OLEV Grant Scheme for a workplace ChargePoint (referred to as the Workplace Charging Scheme or WCS) is a government-approved monetary incentive to enable businesses to provide charging points on site. The WCS reduces the purchase and installation of workplace charge points by 75% (capped at £500 per charge point). This is capped at up to 20 sockets per business, up to a maximum of £10,000 saved.

These schemes were approved by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) as an additional incentive for UK drivers to become early adopters of electric vehicle technology and to reduce emissions.

What exactly does the EVHS Grant offer?

  • The EVHS Grant provides up to £500 off the cost of purchasing and having a charging point installed at your home
  • It is available for most currently electric cars and plug-in hybrids registered or purchased after 1st October 2016
  • You are able to claim one ChargePoint per eligible vehicle and a maximum of 2 eligible vehicles per household
  • If you live in Scotland an additional OLEV Grant is available via the Energy Savings Trust Scotland that grants up to £300 as well as the original £500

Am I eligible for the EVHS Grant?

The EVHS Grant has a few specific requirements you must meet before you qualify.

  • Must have purchased an eligible electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle from 1st October 2016
  • Must have an OLEV-approved ChargePoint installed
  • Must use an OLEV-approved ChargePoint installation company
  • Must have off-street parking such as a driveway or garage
  • Must have your ChargePoint installation date no more than 4 months ahead of the date of delivery for your vehicle

What vehicles are eligible for the EVHS Grant?

Unfortunately, not every plug-in vehicle will be eligible for the EVHS Grant. Any full battery electric vehicles are eligible as these do not produce any emissions and run completely off the battery. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are a bit tricky as they need to have CO2 emissions calculated as being below 75g/km. You can usually find out the emissions of your PHEV within the manual or through an internet search.

Thankfully, OLEV maintains an up to date list of what vehicles are eligible for the grant. You can find it by clicking here (you will need some form of spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel to view it). Second-hand electric vehicles can also be eligible, just make sure that your application for the grant is within 4 months prior to or after receiving your vehicle.

Where do I apply for the EVHS Grant?

In order to claim up to £500 off your purchase and installation of a home charging point, you have to meet the prerequisites as mentioned above. Once you meet these you can apply via the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. You can also apply for the grant via an OLEV-approved ChargePoint installation company who will do all the work for you.

If you live in Scotland and are interested in the additional EVHS Grant through the Energy Saving Trust, you can find out how to apply for this by clicking here.
