Drink driving may become a thing of the past, as the UK government look to introduce a new onboard technology known as the 'alcolock'.

  • An average of 666 people are killed in drink driving incidents in the UK per year
  • With 3,551 serious injuries also included per year
  • UK government to potentially enforce new technology called 'Alcolocks'
  • Alcolocks will serve as an onboard portable breathalyzer connected to the car's system
  • They will have the ability to prevent vehicle ignition if the driver is intoxicated

UK government may introduce 'alcolocks' for new cars

Drink driving is one of the UK's leading causes of accidents on the roads. With an average of 666 people killed and 3,551 serious injuries per year between 1979 and 2014, it's no wonder the UK government are seeking solutions to remedy this.

'Alcolocks' are a brand new technology that will potentially be used to reduce the number of drink-driving related accidents in the UK. Alcolocks are simple in their premise. You will have to blow into them each time you try to start your vehicle. They will have the ability to prevent ignition if the system detects you are over the drink-drive limit, which is 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath.

Website IAM Road Smart recently surveyed over 2,000 motorists regarding the inclusion of alcolocks and an astonishing 90% of motorists wanted them in new cars. Neil Greig from IAM Road Smart said:

“The evidence is clear. Nearly all motorists want new cars fitted with alcolocks to help stop the daily carnage on UK roads from drink driving and this latest PACTS report is even further endorsement. Worldwide integrating technology, such as alcolocks, with rehabilitation courses, has been shown to be the most effective way to stop drink-drive reoffending and reduce crashes".

Starting from 2022, all new cars sold in Europe and the UK will have the alcolock systems enabled so that an onboard portable breathalyzer can be installed. The UK government have yet to say whether the breathalyzers will be installed with all new cars at the point of sale, or whether they'll be added to a past offenders vehicle only. If anything, any technology that reduces accidents on the road is a good thing in our books.
