Even though the Volkswagen I.D. isn't likely to go in to production until at least 2019, VW are already teasing a new model in the I.D. family to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January.

Volkswagen’s era of electric cars is moving forward with the addition of a new I.D. model to be announced in January. The concept design of the Volkswagen I.D. concept car is being brought across to what looks like a concept minivan (the teaser images lead us to believe this will be another VW Budd-E concept with the I.D. design language).

As with the Volkswagen I.D. that was announced at Paris Motor Show 2016, this I.D. model will be able to drive fully autonomously. A light press of the Volkswagen logo on the steering wheel and the vehicle will take over.

The I.D. concept vehicle in Detroit forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future. Its overall concept is revolutionary. It combines ample space for travel with a long electric driving range.”

This model is also expected to have an exceptional electric driving range thanks to battery technology improvements in the next few years. This model is likely to launch around the same time as the VW I.D. car, so that would be 2019 or 2020 if Volkswagen’s estimates are correct.

We'll know more in the coming weeks when VW unveils this concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show, which starts 8 January.
