What Is The Volkswagen ID. LIFE?
The ID series is Volkswagen's award-winning all-electric range. The Volkswagen ID.LIFE represents the next stage of their ACCELERATE strategy.
We recently wrote about some concept cars, namely the Audi Grand Sphere and Sky Sphere. Now Volkswagen have announced their own concept car, the ID.LIFE. The ID.LIFE was recently presented at the International Motor Show IAA Mobility 2021 and we've been told will cost a comfortable 20,000 euros.
So what is the ID.LIFE? It's an urban city concept car that will focus on young people and communal experiences with others. This means the ID.LIFE will be an entertainment centre, featuring the ability to become a cinema, gaming centre or musical hub.
The price itself is a hint at the car being aimed at a younger audience, one who is fully integrated into the digital world having been born into the world of screens. The concept car itself is a simple but striking design. It's a hatchback with sharp angles and bold features that will make it instantly recognisable.
It will feature a removable roof, should your fancy the wind in your hair. The roof will be made out of an 'air chamber textile' which VW says 'lends an open-air feeling' whilst reducing the weight of the car.
It's all-electric, of course, just like the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 and is built on the same MEB platform. Volkswagen calls the MEB platform the "most scalable electrical architecture in the industry" and that the "platform is suitable for vehicles of all types, from small cars to vans".
From what VW have said, the ID.LIFE will come with a 172kW (234hp) front-wheel-drive electric motor that will accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds. It will feature a 57kWh battery that will enable a range of around 248 miles (WLTP).
As it's an electric vehicle, it's built with sustainability in mind and this is reflected in how the ID.LIFE is built. It uses lots of natural and recycled materials, as well as natural paint finishes. The coat of the bodywork uses wood chips as a natural colouring agent, as well as a bio-based hardener. In the interior, there are wood sections that are combined with ArtVelours Eco, bio-oil, natural rubber and rice husks, for a high-quality and eco-friendly finish.
We previously mentioned the cinema and gaming lounge features that will come with the ID.LIFE. A built-in video game console and pull-down projection screen that extends from the dash panel will be included. Seating has been designed in mind to be able to fold down for maximum comfort. Want to watch a movie in the back seats? Fold the front seats down and chill in the back.
Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen says:
"The ID. LIFE is our vision of next-generation fully electric urban mobility. The concept car provides a preview of an ID. model in the small car segment that we will be launching in 2025, priced at around 20,000 euros. This means we are making electric mobility accessible to even more people".
"In creating the ID. LIFE, we have consistently focused on the needs of younger customers. We believe that, even more so than today, the car of the future will be about lifestyle and personal expression. The customer of tomorrow won’t simply want to get from A to B; they will be much more interested in the experiences that a car can offer. The ID. LIFE is our answer to this".
