Why Augmented Reality Displays Are The Future

Augmented reality displays are an exciting up and coming technology that displays floating digital information in front of the driver's vision.

  • Augmented reality displays are a brand new up and coming technology
  • They will offer information such as your speed and map directions
  • The information will sit in front of the driver's vision via a floating animation
  • Sensors will keep the animation steady and in place even over bumpy roads
  • Information displayed will be able to be customised to your liking

What is the augmented reality display?

In March 2021 the Audi Q4 e-tron was announced and one of the main features the car was promoting was a brand new technology called the Augmented Reality Display (ARD). Volkswagens new 'Project Trinity' will also include it. This technology features a digital floating animation display that sits in front of the driver via highly technical sensors and cameras. With over 1,000 sensors sitting in the Audi Q4 e-tron, the technology is able to detect where the AR elements are floating and whether or not they are in front of the driver correctly.

Audi have said that driving over bumps, potholes and uneven roads won't affect the AR's positioning, making sure all the relevant information needed for your journey is within your peripheral vision at all times.

The ARD will be able to display any information you think you need on your car. We imagine they will be customisable to a degree. In the below image you can see that the Audi Q4 e-tron ARD shows your current speed, the max speed limit of the road, the distance to your location and your car's alignment between the lanes.

It will also be able to show you upcoming changes to the road such as roundabouts and directions for when you need to turn left or right at the next turn.

Why augmented reality displays are the future

Currently, we use a few different methods to keep an eye on our speed, sat nav directions and other journey related information. Things such as a digital instrument cluster that sits behind your wheel. Or a sat nav device that usually sits on a corner of the windshield. Whilst all of these current methods are great, they still require you to take your eyes off the road for a few seconds just to check them.

ARD's will ensure that you never have to take your eyes off the road. The information will always be displayed in front of you and thanks to the plethora of sensors detecting changes of elevation or bumps, the animation will cleverly change its position to stay in front of you. This will hopefully decrease the number of daily collisions on our road thanks to us no longer needing to take our eyes off it.
