DVLA Releases Banned Number Plates For The 24-Reg

The DVLA has unveiled its roster of fresh-for-2024 number plates deemed too cheeky for public display, with a slew of potentially eyebrow-raising entries making their way onto the prohibited list.

Biannually, in March and September, the DVLA issues a fresh batch of alphanumeric combinations, featuring the new 'age identifier' number denoting the age of your vehicle.

While these combinations adorn the plates of newly registered cars, there exists a secondary catalogue of banned number plates, condemned to obscurity for their risque nature.

With the transition to a '24' registration looming from March onwards, the latest lineup of forbidden number plates features even more attention-grabbing combinations that might have otherwise found favour among enthusiasts seeking to turn heads.

As the proscribed list illustrates, it's the '4' in '24' that poses a conundrum due to its resemblance to the letter 'A'.

Thankfully for the modest or courteous, plates like AS24 OLE, BA24 TDS, SL24 GSS, SH24 GED and W24 NKR won't be making an appearance on the roads anytime soon. Perhaps it's for the best.

While the subject of banned car number plate combinations may seem light-hearted, it's a matter the DVLA takes seriously, convening meetings ahead of each new plate format release, twice annually, to ensure no unsuitable combinations slip through the cracks.

The criteria for banning plates hinge on whether they "may cause offence, embarrassment, or are in poor taste."

The DVLA emphasises that only a small fraction of combinations end up on the blacklist, with the majority of registrations being readily available to the public.

Below, you'll find a comprehensive list of banned '74' plate combinations, allowing you to cherry-pick any favourites. Do note, however, that some entries may be more explicit than those highlighted above and could potentially cause offence or distress.
