EVs Eligible for the UK Electric Car Grant 2025: Full List & Leasing Tips

Why the Electric Car Grant Matters for Leasing Customers

The UK Electric Car Grant (ECG) was relaunched in July 2025 to help drivers switch to electric cars. The scheme provides up to £3,750 off new EVs, depending on sustainability standards met during production.

For customers considering leasing an EV, this grant means lower upfront costs, reduced monthly rentals, and more choice in affordable electric models. But not all EVs qualify, and the rules can be confusing—so we’ve put together this guide to explain which cars are covered, how the grant works, and what to watch out for.

How the Electric Car Grant Works

  • Two bands of discount:

Band Grant Amount Eligibility
Band 1 £3,750 Meets stricter environmental & production standards
Band 2 £1,500 Meets core EV eligibility but not Band 1 requirements
  • Price cap: Vehicle RRP must be £37,000 or under (before grant).

  • Zero-emission requirement: Only fully electric cars (BEVs) qualify.

  • Automatic discount: The grant is applied at point of lease/sale by the dealer or leasing company—you don’t apply separately.

Leasing Tips for Customers

  1. Check the trim level – Higher trims can exceed the £37,000 cap and lose eligibility.

  2. Look for Band 1 models – If available, these save you an extra £2,250 compared to Band 2.

  3. Ask for the grant in your quote – Ensure the discount is applied in lease pricing.

  4. Consider used EV leasing too – Not covered by the grant, but often cheaper monthly payments.

  5. Think beyond the grant – Factor in insurance, home charging, and BiK (for business drivers).
