Take care to insure your pets are secure & unable to move around your vehicle whilst driving - or risk a hefty fine and even invalidated insurance!

A considerable amount of drivers have been recently found to be unaware that driving with unrestrained pets could bring you a fine of up to £5,000. Ouch. Not only that, but should an accident occur because of this, you may find this act will end up invalidating your insurance. Rule 57 of the Highway Code: “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.”

There is actually no specific law against driving with unrestrained pets, however this easily falls under the category of driving without due care and attention if pets cause you any kind of distraction. A charge of this nature could come with a fine of £1,000 and penalty points, but if the case goes to court drivers could face fines of up to £5,000 and nine penalty points on their licence. It's not just for your safety... pets can potentially end up in considerable danger! If an accident happens, the animal can just as easily been thrown forward as much as an unrestrained passenger and suffer serious injury. It can literally act like a missile within the car and seriously injure a passenger or the driver.

Your pet might look cute with their head out the window enjoying the wind, and by all means enjoy a nice Sunday drive with your pet, or use your car to take your Pet for their local park or beach visit, but make sure they're restrained! It's not worth the risk.
