The Volkswagen ID.4 SUV is here. It's VW's first-ever all-electric SUV and follows in the footsteps of the recently released ID.3 which has already won numerous awards. Just like the ID.3, the ID.4 will release with a limited run of its '1st Edition' model, with later models being released further in the year. VW have announced that a four-wheel-drive model will be available at a later date as well.

What does the Volkswagen ID.4 1st Edition come with?

The new ID.4 boasts a class-leading amount of technology and digital connectivity. Powered by a highly efficient electric powertrain and battery layout, the 77kWh battery is capable of 310 (WLTP) miles of range. The 1st Edition comes with a pre-configured amount of features and plenty of kit to keep most drivers happy. Here's a quick rundown of the features the ID.4 SUV comes with:

  • 20-inch 'Drammen' alloys
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Fully legal tinted rear windows
  • Reversing camera and parking sensors
  • ArtVelours heated microfleece seats

The ID.4 has an impressive 204bhp of power and has a 310 Nm of torque instantly available thanks to the electric motor. This propels the rear-wheel-drive SUV to 62mph from a standstill in 8.5 seconds, with a maximum speed of 99mph, where permitted.

How practical is the Volkswagen ID.4's electric range and charging time?

As with all electric vehicles right now, customers are mostly interested in battery range as well as charging times. Thankfully, the ID.4 has an impressive range right off the bat with the 1st Edition model. The 77kWh battery is capable of up to 310 WLTP miles and benefits from rapid charging compatibility of up to 125 kW. This means you can get up to 199 miles in just 30 minutes of charging with the most powerful public rapid chargers. For smaller chargers like the 3kW and 7kW home plugs, you'd be looking at around 20 hours 0-100% with the former and 10 hours with the latter. The ID.4 can charge up to 30 miles per hour with a 7kW charger.

The Volkswagen brand's high-voltage battery has a warranty of eight years or up to 100,000 miles.

Joe Laurence, the ID. Family Product Manager at Volkswagen UK has said: “With the popularity of SUVs as high as ever, we are proud to be introducing our first all-electric contender in the form of the ID.4. Its external dimensions are similar to the Tiguan, but thanks to the MEB platform and the packaging benefits of an electric drivetrain it boasts even more interior space along with that all-important lofty driving position"

“The ID.4 is also our first electric vehicle that can be fitted with an optional tow bar, suitable for trailers weighing up to 1,000kg. This really is an incredibly practical car, and with the batteries mounted under the passenger compartment, it has a low centre of gravity which equips it with great driving dynamics and balanced handling. We know our customers are going to love it.”
